EUROPE/ITALY - WITH A HISTORY OF 500 YEARS THE ORDER OF ST JOHN OF GOD HOSPITALLER BROTHERS FOR THE FUTURE OF HEALTH CARE: RELIGIOUS AND LAY PEOPLE COMPARE NOTES

Wednesday, 14 January 2004

Rome (Fides Service) – Heal, care for, rehabilitate. This is the main mission of St John of God Hospitaller Brothers looking to the future of health care work with a proposal and a challenge: promote globalisation of hospitality with a programme which unties the offer of a modern technical project and a humanised project, through the exercise of professional skills ever more at the service of the sick.
A new commitment to which all those who work at St John of god hospital structures, religious and laity, in view of qualified sharing of the charisma of hospitality by which the Order is inspired.
The challenge of more effective collaboration between religious and laity will be discussed by the superiors of the Hospitaller Order from 15 to 17 January 2004 in Genzano near Rome, at the St John of God Institute for a three day event devoted to updating management: directors of healthcare and administration, local and provincial Order Superiors, lay collaborators from all over Italy will discuss ways to combine health care with ethic principles of management with the objective of creating a model of management of the Institutes in keeping with the Order’s charisma
“We are discussing the future which the Order will be capable of building in the next millennium at the service of those who suffer, of those who have to ask for help to rebuild his or her personal life project.. Probably there will be places and forms of attention by the Order which demand radical change for which we must be ready if we want to be present in the third millennium offering concrete and updated health-care in the light of carious changes in the health care panorama”, Brother Pascual Piles, Prior General told Fides Service.
The challenge is therefore to share the values on which the Institutions are founded in respect for the different cultures and religions in order to concretise the reality of the charisma of hospitality with respect and promotion of the principles of social justice. The main key which guides the work of the Brothers of St John of God the Order’s founder, is his desire to do good conjugating justice with Christian charity to offer the sick and the needy an efficient and qualified service at the scientific technical and human levels.
Values ever important for an Order founded about 500 years ago, present all over the world with 300 institutions in 45 different countries. Every day 40,000 collaborators religious, doctors, nurses, office workers and volunteers assist an average of 35,000 patients thanks to the support of about 300,000 benefactors.
