AFRICA/CAPE VERDE - MINDELO NEW DIOCESE, FIRST BISHOP REV. GOMES FURTADO

Vatican City (Fides Service) – The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, has (14 November 2003) created the diocese of Mindelo in Cape Verde with territory taken from the diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde, rendering it immediately subject to the Holy See.
The Holy Father has appointed (14 November 2003) first Bishop of Mindelo, Cape Verde, Reverend Father Arlindo Gomes Furtado, until now parish priest of Mindelo.

The Bishop elect Reverend Arlindo Gomes Furtado was born on 15 November 1949 at Santa Catarina on the Island of Santiago. He studied for the priesthood in his home country and in Rome where he obtained a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture at the Biblicum College. He was ordained a priest on 18 July 1976. He has since been: assistant priest; diocesan bursar and chancellor; chaplain to Cape Verde nationals in Holland; studies in Sacred Scripture in Rome; professor; vicar general and parish priest. The Bishop will reside in Mindelo and the Church of Our Lady of the Light will be the Cathedral.The new diocese of Mindelo situated on the Island of San Vincente like the mother diocese will be immediately subject to the Holy See.
