Friday, 5 December 2003

Santiago (Fides Service) – The Bio-Ethics Commission of the Chilean Bishops’ Conference has called the public’s attention to the danger of AIDS prevention campaigns, imposing the use of condoms generating false security in people and thus increasing the risk of infection.
In a declaration issued for World Day Against AIDS, the Commission proposes that education in human sexuality should “valorise human dignity integrating sexuality in the context of authentic, faithful love, capable of self control and to desire the real good of the person loved”. The Commission also recalls recommendations coming from international bodies which say that a far safer way to avoid infection is to abstain from sexual relations or to be faithful to one partner.
With regard to the use of the condom, the Commission quotes scientific publications which affirm that this method does not provide total safety AIDS it reduces the possibility of infection but it fails in 20% of the cases. (AP) (5/12/2003 Fides Service; lines:19 words:189)
