ASIA/INDIA - FIRST INTERACTIVE MALAYALAM BIBLE ON CD-ROM TO SPREAD THE WORD AMONG INDIA’S YOUTH

Tuesday, 2 December 2003

Cochin (Fides Service) – Young people in India are spending increasingly more time in front of the computer. To spread the Word of God among PC users, young and old, ten years of labour have made the Bible in Malayalam available on CD. This is the first inter-active compact disc in Malayalam, a language spoken in the region of Kerala by more than 30 million people.
CD users can search by name or key word in Sacred Scripture: this follows a division in chapters and verses. The Bible is complete with notes and commentaries on more than 50 Biblical episodes as well as the parables and miracles of Jesus. The text is enhanced by 50 illustrations, reproductions of works by well known painters. Certain Scripture passages can be listened to in audio.
“This interactive Bible helps the use to make a fascinating journey through Scripture and we hope this will touch the hearts of computer uses, particularly the young ones” Dr Vergis head of the research team which produced the work, explains.
The undertaking is fully supported by the local Catholic Church of Syro-Malabar rite which uses Malayalam as a liturgical language. Malayalam is a Dravidian dialect akin to Tamil. (PA) (Fides Service 2/12/2003 lines 128 words 253)
