AMERICA/URUGUAY - Bishops discuss: Pastoral Guidelines for next few years, Continental Mission, National Youth Day and participation at World Youth Day in Sydney

Florida (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Uruguay (CEU) is holding its first plenary assembly of 2008, 2 - 9 April at the Jesus Good Shepherd Retreat House in Florida. The plenary opened with a spiritual retreat given by Bishop Francisco Barbosa of the diocese of Minas. Today 3 April, there will be a visit by apostolic nuncio, Archbishop Janusz Bolonek. The bishops will then approve final draft of Pastoral Guidelines for the local Church for the next few years focussing on aspects relative to the Continental Mission decided by 5th General Conference of the Council of Bishops' Conferences of Latin America and the Caribbean last year in Aparecida.
On Friday 4 April the bishops will discuss aspects of their five-yearly ad limina visit to Rome scheduled for September this year. The afternoon will be devoted to preparing the participation of members of the Uruguay Bishops' Conference at the Synod of Bishops convoked by the Holy Father in Rome 5 - 26 October on the theme “The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church”.
On Monday 7 April, the Bishops will discuss preparations for National Youth Day 6-7 September in Tacuarembó and the participation of young Uruguayans at World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia, in July. The Bishops will also listen to a report on a meeting organised by the Council of Latin American Bishops' Conference on Church Movements and the activity of Caritas Uruguay. At the end of the assembly the Bishops will issue a statement on their work.
The CEU, now that Mgr Martín Pérez Scremini has been appointed Bishop of Florida where he will be installed on 26 April, is composed of 10 residential bishop, 2 auxiliary bishops and 3 emeritus bishops. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 3/4/2008; righe 24, parole 308)
