AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Various initiatives for celebrating the Day of the Unborn Child, to create awareness of the value of unborn life

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - The Colombian Bishops’ Conference is promoting, as they have in the past, the celebration of the Day of the Unborn Child, thus uniting its efforts to the Church’s international campaign for a culture of life, in defense of unborn children. This year, it will be held on March 31, the liturgical celebration of the Feast of the Annunciation.
The main purpose of the Day is to increase awareness among all people of the value of unborn life, that it may be respected and defended. The topics prepared by the Bishops’ Conference for the celebration of the Day of the Unborn Child are: God’s gift to all of a life in plenitude; The unborn child: called to the fullness of life; The Church: voice for those who have none; Recognizing and protecting rights of some does not infringe on the rights of others.
In addition, they offer some suggestions for celebrating the Day. Among them are some of a more formative nature, for example: family assemblies of study on the themes during the week of March 24-31, formation workshops on responsible parenting (especially for the youth), video presentations on abortion, and workshops given by public leaders and health care personnel on objection of conscience and informed consent. Other activities are of a more social and cultural nature, such as making the Day known among the dioceses and in the parishes, through the mass media, and through public demonstrations and gatherings, as well as through cultural expressions of defense of human life. Finally, there is the religious aspect of the day, which will include a Mass and blessing of pregnant mothers, as well as opportunity for spiritual healing.
