Wednesday, 12 March 2008

Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) - June 5-7, there will be a Latin American Family Congress held in Argentina, with the theme: “Possibilities and Challenges of the Latin American Family.” The Congress is being held in preparation for the 6th World Family Encounter, to be held in Mexico, January 18-19, 2009. It is being organized by the Institute for Marriage and the Family of the Catholic University of Argentina (UCA) and the Episcopal Council for Latin America (CELAM), and will take place on the UCA campus.
The Congress is geared towards the leaders of the Family Committees of the Bishops’ Conferences of Latin America, directors of Family Institutes in Christian universities of Latin American, movements or institutions that work to promote the family, parents, teachers, and the general public. This Congress will be an attempt to create a meeting ground for the academic and pastoral sectors. With this in mind, the program includes an analysis of the situation of the family in Latin America, using official data gathered from statistics. Some of the themes for reflection are: the mission and identity of the family in a pragmatic and secularized society, the role of the man in the family, parenthood challenges, and the politics of reproductive health education and the parents’ rights and duties.
There are still openings in the program, for the possible insertion of additional enriching activities in the Congress. In the days preceding the Congress, there will be a string of Study Days on themes surrounding the family. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 12/3/2008 righe 20, parole 248)
