Johannesburg (Fides Service ) – South Africa is the country with the highest number of people suffering from Aids in the world: 5 million out of a population of 45 million are infected.
In view of the alarming spread of the infection the South African government has said antiretroviral drugs will be available on the national health scheme and it has approved a plan to distribute AIDS treatment free. A distribution centre will be opened in each of the country’s 50 health districts.
For the programme to operate the present health system must be improved and more health workers trained.
South African health ministry has said there is a long way to go before the AIDS epidemic is brought under control. (AP) (21/11/2003 Fides Service; lines: 16 words: 148)
