OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA - “Young people, evangelise: WYD is coming!”, says Auxiliary Bishops of Sydney

Friday, 1 February 2008

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) - The event is imminent and an extra effort for evangelisation is needed over the next few months: this request was addressed to young Catholics by Bishop Julian Charles Porteous, auxiliary Bishop of Sydney, who underlined “evangelisation is the key to helping more young people live the splendid experience of a World Youth Day”.
The Bishop said he was confident about the commitment and enthusiasm of young lay people who are putting their energies into making WYD a success, which includes helping thousands of young people from different parts of the world to have a unique experience of communion with God and sharing in the Church.
The Bishop said: “As Pope Paul VI said, the new evangelisers are the laity, adults and young people, who have access to all sectors of society”, stressing the need for Catholic communities to help the faith grow and develop.
In the meantime initiatives of twinning continue between young people of Australian dioceses and young people in dioceses with less resources, to allow many of the latter to take part in WYD. The Immaculate Heart of Mary diocese in Wagga Wagga diocese in collaboration with the Pilgrim Partnership Support Program has launched a campaign to encourage people to sponsor the participation of young Catholics from East Timor in World Youth Day in Sydney in July this year. PPSP is a WYD initiative which forms partnerships between communities, schools and parishes in Australia and New Zealand and in remote communities in Oceania to help more youngsters take part in WYD.
