Chillán (Agenzia Fides) - Some 300 delegates from parishes, Catholic schools, moves of apostolate, services and diocesan offices, took part in a two day Diocesan Church Meeting held Chillán 4 and 5 January organised by the diocesan pastoral office on the theme “Disciples and Missionaries of Jesus Christ, that our people of Ñuble may have life in Him". The goal was to help the local Church make a new encounter with Jesus Christ and to become his disciples and missionaries. A diocesan plan was drafted on the basis of challenges identified by 5th General Conference of the Council of Bishops' Conferences of Latin America and the Caribbean in Aparecida held in May last year. Revision led to the identification of local challenges and pastoral priorities looking at the past and considering previous pastoral guidelines. Reflection on the conclusions reached at Aparecida, in the light of the situation in the diocese, led to the drafting of a Diocesan Pastoral Plan.
Among the conclusions reached: “the fundamental characteristics of diocesan apostolate must aim to achieve a missionary dream of building a diocesan community of believers”. The community of the Church in Chillán, “is committed to working to build an intensely missionary Church whose sign will be a Great Diocesan Mission. This calls for renewal of hearts and which must be directed to a permanent missionary attitude”.
In a message to open the Diocesan Church Meeting Bishop Carlos Pellegrin Barrera, urged his people to “strive for new missionary zeal with courage and to strive for holiness”, and he announced that his first Pastoral Letter this year will be focussed on the missionary dimension. “As we journey towards the Great Diocesan Mission- said Bishop Barrera -every community must become a powerful centre of radiant of life in Christ”.
