EUROPE/SPAIN - Twelve associations stage abortion protest in front of the health ministry in Madrid

Friday, 30 November 2007

Madrid (Agenzia Fides) - At 6.30pm this evening twelve associations will gather in front of the ministry of health in Madrid to call the government and parliament to guarantee rigorous obedience to the laws with regard to abortion. The associations say penal law must be followed to the letter; in the application of the three envisaged cases, and especially "risk for the psychic health of the mother"; they call for greater zeal on the part of health inspectors who must prosecute offenders instead of favouring impunity; more social assistance for expectant mothers, and the promotion of alternatives such as adoption instead of abortion.
The associations taking part in the demonstration include: the Spanish Family Policy Institute, Tomás Moro Juridical Centre, Spanish Family Union, Pro vida Madrid Association, Institute Woman and Life, United pro Life, Evangelium Vitae, SOS Familia, La Vita Importa Platform, Hay Alternativas HazteOir.org, Adevida Madrid.
One of the associations HazteOir.org, says " risk for the psychic health of the mother " could become a loophole "allowing liberal abortion in Spain", and he accuses the Administration of "negligence", “failing to put the due zeal into healthcare inspections” and failing to make sure the "law is kept."
For the Institute Woman and Life, to avoid systematic breaching of the abortion laws healthcare inspection should cover abortion centres all over Spain. According to recent data collected by the Institute of Family Policies abortion is the main cause of morality in the country (see Fides 28/11/2007).
