AMERICA/MEXICO - “We are ready to undertake a new lap of our pastoral journey declaring ourselves in permanent state of mission”: Bishops message at the end of plenary assembly

Monday, 19 November 2007

Lago de Guadalupe (Agenzia Fides) - At the end of the plenary assembly 12- 16 November the Bishops of Mexico addressed message to the people of God on the main challenges facing the Church and society today. The Bishops spoke of three main issues: globalisation must be at the service of the person but it "threatens to lead to great monopolies, making profit the supreme value and generating more poverty "; democracy, despite positive progress "there must be more participation based on respect for human rights "; weakening of Christian life "due to secularism, hedonism and indifference, and also lack of care on our part for the lay faithful, evangelisation with little ardour and lacking new methods and expressions". In the light of the Document of Aparecida the Bishops sought to supply answers to these challenges.
First they recall "these problems can be faced only with God". The Bishops say the response must be "new evangelisation to meet all the different situations of our people", those who suffer, those who live on the streets, emigrants, drug addicts, those in prison, indigenous peoples. “ We are ready to undertake a new lap of our pastoral journey declaring ourselves in permanent state of mission " the Bishops affirm in the message.
The Bishops indicate various fields for this action of renewal: the family; youth "the majority of our people who need a powerful witness and clear words to encourage them as members of the Church "; Life, "particularly within the families". The express the hope of being "a lively, faithful and credible Church; to put new effort into the preference for the poor; to work with all men and women of good will to promote the presence of God in society and intensify with audacity pastoral care for the family and for life ".
The message concludes with a call to Catholics to take part in events which strengthen the faith of believers: National Eucharistic Congress in May 2008 at Morelia; the International Eucharistic Congress in June 2008 in Canada; the 6th World Meeting of Families in January 2009, in Mexico City, "an important event and a blessing for the Church and society".
