AMERICA/MEXICO - “The priesthood of Jesus Christ according to Saint Paul”: Mexico hosts 6th International Retreat for Priests

Friday, 16 November 2007

Guadalajara (Agenzia Fides) - From 19 to 23 November the Universidad Univa of Guadalajara in Mexico, will host the 6th International Retreat for Priests on the Theme: “ The priesthood of Jesus Christ according to Saint Paul”. The thirteen talks will be given by Archbishop Giuseppe Costanzo of Siracusa and Salvatore Martinez, Italian national president of Renewal in the Spirit (Charismatic Renewal). Mr Martinez spoke at the 5th such Retreat in 2005 together with Archbishop Angelo Comastri.
The Retreat is sponsored by the Council of Latin American Bishops' Conferences and organised by the Latin American Catholic Charismatic Council. Participants will include more than 1,000 priests and 25 bishops from 15 different countries. Last July, as part of international initiatives to mark the 40th anniversary of Charismatic Renewal, Salvatore Martinez was in Mexico to lead a retreat at Queretaro Sports Stadium for 32,000 young Catholics from every diocese in Mexico.
“The continent of Latin America - said president Martinez - is a ‘reserve of humanity’ at the beginning of the Third Christian Millennium. It is not an appendix of civilisation to be exploited by the hegemony of our industrialised first world. Instead it is concrete hope, a living memory of social, affective and family values from which to draw. We have a grave responsibility towards these peoples to whom we have handed on the faith: to help them not cut to the roots of Christian humanism and solidarity, as it is happening in our Europe in the name of modernity ”.
