Roma (Agenzia Fides) - “The issue of marriage and the family is ever more central in the present debate on the foundations of civil society. The voice of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church is the bearer of a message which cannot be ignored even by non believers”. Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, Archbishop of Bologna, writes in the first pages of a book by Prof. Carla Rossi Espagnet “Famiglia e libertà. La vita familiare cristiana e il Magistero della Chiesa” (published by Ares), presented yesterday 13 November at the Pontifical University Santa Croce. The volume treats the social relevance of Marriage and the Family in relation to the reaching of the Church. The presentation of the volume was an opportunity for an interesting reflection on the part of the author and two prominent figures in the present public debate in Italy on the family: Savino Pezzotta and Lucetta Scaraffia. Dwelling on various themes connected with the present reality of the family and marriage and possible solutions to solve the difficulties encountered by the family institution in Italy, Pezzotta said that the Family Day event on 12 May was forgotten all too soon, and that indeed some pretend it never happened. Lucetta Scaraffia recalled among other things that before the 20th century the Church's understanding of the family was accepted even by non believers. (S.L.)
