AMERICA/ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - State offices for public health and social assistance launch vaccination programme among marginalised communities

Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - A campaign to vaccinate children against diphtheria and tetanus has been launched in the town of San José de Oca promoted by state offices for public health and social assistance. The vaccine will be given to children aged 2 to 11 months living with their parents in shelters. Children aged 12 to 23 months will be vaccinated against five diseases at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks.
Local health workers are also distributing food, clothes, blankets to people in isolated areas of San José de Ocoa province affected by the tropical storm Noel.
The vaccination campaign is being carried out in El Limón, El Pinal, El Coroso, La Ciénega, Sabana Larga and Ranchito villages, as well as measures to prevent mosquito bites carriers of dengue fever and malaria.
Local health workers are also providing assistance to storm victims sheltering in Casa en Construcción Home and El Rosario school in Azua, Bahoruco province and Villa Olímpica and people sheltering in Los Mormones Church in Barahona, the church of Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, and Monte Sión Unión Church.
