Tuesday, 6 November 2007

Asuncion (Agenzia Fides) - During its 180th plenary assembly 5 - 9 November, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Paraguay will discuss important issues for the life of the Church, and outline "Common Pastoral Activity for the Church in Paraguay" following a process of ample nation wide church consultation. The plenary agenda also includes an analysis of the national situation and aspects of the church realities, poverty, separation of families due to massive emigration. In this context the Bishops will listen to reports from experts and bodies in the various fields.
At the opening of the Assembly the Bishops denounced a situation of disorientation and lack of leadership in the country. This is noted by the faithful and the bishops, said Conference spokesman Mgr. Adalberto Martínez. He said that as church leaders the Bishops would examine this situation carefully and discuss the electoral process of April 2008. He also said a team was drafting a document on the country's situation, considered critical and that next year the Church would launch a civic education campaign to help voters choose the best representatives. Presidential elections are scheduled for 20 April 2008. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 6/11/2007; righe 16, parole 221)
