Wednesday, 10 October 2007

Manila (Agenzia Fides) - The Archdiocese of Manila has launched a programme of study and action on the theme “Global Warming and Climate Change”, mainly for young people. In a recent meeting some 500 young people from Catholic schools, parishes and associations agreed on the necessity for every person to assume responsibility for the protection of the environment and to give more attention to ecological matters.
Speakers dealt with the growing incidence of typhoons and other natural disasters in the Philippines, the destruction of bio-diversity for palm cultivation, carbon monoxide emission particularly in cities like Manila. The participants recalled the delicate relation between information, and environmental themes, climate change, alternative energy, stressing the need for greater commitment in the diocese to safeguard creation with prayers, awareness building and concrete activity.
Young people to whom the future belongs are called to play a role in the life of the Church, active in parish life, witnesses of faith in the family and in society, ambassadors of a change of values for the growth and progress of the country.
The study programme said environmental problems are the responsibility of every citizen. And Christians should shoulder this responsibility inspired by the Gospel values.
Pollution of soil, rivers, air is a serious in the Philippines. Catholic schools promote respect for nature as an opportunity to show love for God the creator. Safeguarding creation and environmental sustainability are crucial for the country.
The local Catholic Church offers full support for these schools programmes which involve many pupils.
The campaign will also focus on living conditions of the indigenous peoples, subject to oppression and deprived of natural resources and ancestral lands by mining companies which obtain government permission to exploit the mineral reserves. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 10/10/2007 righe 29 parole 290)
