AFRICA/GUINEA BISSAU - AN IMPORTANT DAY IN BISSAU: S. EGIDIO COMMUNITY HOSPITAL, DESTROYED BY CIVIL WAR, REBUILT AND NOW WORKING

Tuesday, 28 October 2003

Roma (Agenzia Fides) – On October 20 the S. Egidio Hospital in Bissau resumed its activity: the first departments to open were the hospital’s dispensary, radiology department and analysis laboratory. At last, after a long time, blood tests and radiology examination, hitherto inaccessible, are possible. S. Egidio Community’s commitment to rebuild the hospital represents great progress for health in Guinea Bissau. Already people in need of hospitalisation are lining up for medical examination. The hospital’s first objective is to attend to the problem of malnutrition of children and then it will start the DREAM programme (see Fides 4 September 2003), for which special sectors were built. Hospital staff doctors, nurses, administration and technicians have resumed service with enthusiasm. An important signal for a country with numerous problems and where most people live in conditions of extreme poverty. (AP) (28/10/2003 Fides Service; lines:15 words:167)
