AMERICA/ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - Water pollution favours high incidence and spread of intestinal parasites

Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - The Dominican National College of Bio-Analysis CODOBIO, announced that most boys and girls living in El Arroz village in the La Ciénega district, are carriers of ‘Blastocisti Hominis’, an intestinal parasite which causes diarrhoea, abdominal pain and de-hydration.
CODOBIO president, Milagros de León, said the discovery was made during a tests carried out by the College which revealed the discovery of parasites similar to Blastocisti Hominis, due to polluted water and certain foods.
Tests on 169 children gave the following results: 38 % infected by Blastocisti Hominis parasite, 25 % conendolimax, 17.4 % Giardia Camblia, 10.1% entoamebacoli, 5.8 % entoameba Histolylica, 2.9 % Áscaris cumbriocoide and 1.4 % Aneulostoma Duodenale or Uncinaria.
Only 17.4 per cent of the tested minors living in the village situated on the banks of the River Ozama, were found to be immune.
Besides laboratory tests CODOBIO the people at El Arroz de la Ciénaga received dental and child health care as well as free supplies of vitamins, anti influenza vaccines and oral hydrating treatment.
