ASIA/INDIA - Flood emergency in Assam state more than a third of the population affected

Bologna (Agenzia Fides) - A serious emergency due to flooding caused by monsoon rains has arisen in Assam State in India. Torrential rains in recent weeks affected over two thirds of the population leaving at least 50 dead and 3.5 million homeless.
The AIFO (Associazione Italiana Amici di Raoul Follereau) coordinator for India through a local partner Seva Kendra Silchar Association (Caritas Aizawl diocese) is organising aid. AIFO has already sent 7.000 Euro for relief aid, clean water and food supplies to people in the affected areas.
AIFO has been in Assam since 2001, running with the local partner, a community based Rehabilitation programme for social-economic development of Tribal peoples in the Longai Valley. AIFO personnel involved in the Rehabilitation are now involved in distributing emergency aid to flood victims.
