ASIA/MYANMAR - Christian Churches all over the world pray for peace and justice in Myanmar

Saturday, 8 September 2007

London (Agenzia Fides) - Justice and peace Myanmar is the intention of a vast campaign of prayer involving Christians all over the world launched by London based Christian Solidarity Worldwide. Christians in 13 countries have already joined the initiative United Kingdom, United States Canada, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Italia, Norway, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, where special prayers will be said for the intention.
The prayer campaign comes at a difficult time for Myanmar governed by a military junta and recently agitated by popular protests- supported also by Buddhist monks - in various parts of the country, which the police repressed with force.
This prayer campaign for Myanmar is the latest in a series of initiatives organised at the European level to increase awareness on the issue of respect for human rights and the promotion of democracy in the south east Asian country, where life is still difficult for ethnic and religious minorities. Over the border with Thailand various international organisations such as the Jesuit Refugee Service assist refugees who flee to neighbouring victims of the conflict between the regular Myanmar army and indigenous minority groups.
