AFRICA/SOMALIA - UN World Food Programme says more food is needed in Somalia

Friday, 20 July 2007

Mogadishu (Agenzia Fides) - The United Nations World Food programme says it has urgent need of donations to avoid interruption of food programmes in Somalia, in view of expected poor harvests.
The growing need for food aid follows a warning issued by the Food and UN Agriculture Organisation that due to drought there would be no or little harvests in July and August in most of central and southern Somalia.
WFP director in Somalia Peter Goossens said the agency urgently needs 19.5 million dollars or 26,500 tons of food before the end of 2007 to feed one million Somalis. Unless it receives more funds in October WFP will have a deficit of 8,500 tons which, added to the previous deficit will make 70,000 tons equal to 53 million dollars by May 2008.
“We ask for immediate contributions because the needs of the most vulnerable people, most are women and children, continue to grow and it could take three or four months to get the food to where it is needed in the country”.
