Nuova Delhi (Agenzia Fides) - The candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize of Argentinean HIV/AIDS activist Patricia Pérez, is being supported by the southern Indian state of Kerala where recently five HIV+ children were expelled from school.
“We have joined the campaign because in a state like Kerala, HIV+ persons are subject to discrimination” said the president of the Foundation for Integrated Research on Mental Health FIRM, Lalu Joseph.
Patricia Perez, a 45-year-old HIV-positive woman is the founder of the Forum of Non-Governmental Organisations that fights discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS.

Cases of discrimination in India continue to happen. In June the medical staff at a hospital in Uttar refused to assist a woman in labour because she had AIDS and they feared infection. The woman gave birth with the help of her husband.
India has a population of 1.12 billion and according to official reports some 2.5 million people are affected by HIV/AIDS. It is the third country in the world for the number of cases, following South Africa and Nigeria.
